PART 25 : Ehsaas

Armaan and Riddhima started off from Padma's house around 3-3.30 in the morning.

"Armaan chalne se pehle, please mamaji se ek baar mil lein?"

"Itni raat ko?" Armaan asked.

"Mujhey achha nahin lagege agar mein unhey bina bataaye chali gayi tho...please Armaan!"

Armaan swerved the car towards Dr Misra's house per his wife's request. Dr Misra was surprised, but glad that Riddhima was finally going to Armaan's house. He gave his blessings to the couple as they drove towards Mumbai. Armaan felt a little guilty on seeing the old man drag out of his bed; he looked worn out and tired-Armaan remembered that he had promised Dr Misra, he would take over his practice and stay back in Ramgarh. Armaan justified his decision to move to Mumbai on circumstances-he was helpless, what could he do?

Riddhima was excited about going to her own home. She was back to her chirpy and chatty self throughout their journey. Armaan held her hand as he drove and was pleased to see Riddhima happy, "lagta hai meri Basanti phir se jaag gayi hai!"

"Jab tak Veeru Basanti ke saath hai, Basanti kabhie so nahin sakti!" she squeezed his hand and brought his hand close to her face. Armaan smiled back and caressed her face gently, "kitni kamzor ho gayi ho kuch hi dino mein?"

"Ab theek ho jaaoongi…..mera doctor jo mere saath hai," she kissed his hand and interlocked it with her fingers.

They did not realise, but the time flew by quickly as they chatted and teased each other all the way back.

"Yeh raha tumhara ghar!" Armaan parked the car in front of a 3-storey apartment complex.

Armaan helped Riddhima out of the car and carried her bag to the lobby, "Uffo...lagta hai lift kaam nahin kar rahi!" Armaan pressed the buttons of the elevator irately.

"Chalo stairs se chalte hain," Riddhima pointed to the flight of stairs.

"Nahin jaan....tum abhi poori tarah theek nahin huyi ho....I can't have you climb," he paused as he had an idea, "yeh bag pakdo," he handed the bag to Riddhima and to her surprise, lifted her in both his arms and started climbing the stairs.

'Armaan! Gir jaayenge hum dono! Kya kar rahe ho?" Riddhima's protests fell on deaf ears.

"Chup chap leti raho! Samjhi! Sab padosi jaag jaayengey," Armaan frowned and scolded her with clenched teeth.

"Armaan! Tum bhi na! Theek hai jaisi tumhari marzi," Riddhima just smiled and relented, aware that it was no use arguing with Armaan on certain matters. She kind of liked being pampered by him after all these days.

They reached their 3 rd floor apartment, # 303. Armaan placed Riddhima down, "tum yahin wait karo…..main abhi aaya."

He unlocked the door to their apartment and returned with a bowl of red colored water.

"Ab dulhan rani….ismein apne shubh kadam rakhiye, aur apne ghar mein pravesh keejiye," Armaan gestured with both hands.

Riddhima was amused, "lagta hai pehle se tayyari kar rakhi thi."

"Ek na ek din tho tumhey apne ghar aana hi tha jaan-e-man," Armaan winked, "so what if it was not exactly planned for today?"

Riddhima stepped into the kumkum colored water and graced their apartment with her footprints.

Armaan helped bring her luggage in and shut the door behind her.

"Kaisa laga apna ghar? Sorry, abhi yahan furniture, TV wagarah kuch bhi nahin hai,"Armaan apologized for their bare dwelling.

Riddhima walked around their one bedroom apartment and saw the bare walls and floors. There was a sleeping bag on the bedroom floor; unpacked boxes in the corner; Armaan's clothes were lying all over the place, but this was heaven for Riddhima, "Armaan, this is wonderful! Koi baat nahin yahan furniture aur TV nahin hai…..hamara pyaar tho hai…bas….aur kisi cheez ki zaroorat nahin hai," she hugged Armaan and rested her head on his chest, "Armaan….hum is ghar ko apne pyaar se hi bahut hara-bhara banaa denge……we don't need anything else."

Armaan stroked her hair, "thanks Riddhima…..main jab se aaya hoon….kaam mein hi itna busy raha ki ghar ke liye kuch bhi nahin laa saka. Ab mujhey tayyar hona hai…..kaam par bhi tho jaana hai…..aaj shaam ko shopping chalengey…OK?" he kissed her and groaned, "mmmm…..God I missed you."

"I missed you too…..achha yeh batao, kya loge breakfast mein?" Riddhima asked

"Well, I don't think we have many choices…..ghar mein kuch bhi nahin hai…..main clinic mein hi khaa loonga….aur tumharey liye kuch bazaar se le aata hoon," Armaan felt guilty that he had not even done any groceries yet. He had survived on the cafeteria food at the Surgical Center and never bothered to buy any supplies for home.

"Tum chinta mat karo! Jao tayyar ho jao….I will manage," Riddhima pushed him to the bathroom.

Armaan was puzzled, but he knew Riddhima was very resourceful and would figure something out.

Riddhima stepped out of their apartment and saw the milkman in front of their neighbor's door. Riddhima went forward and introduced herself to their neighbor. The neighbor was a middle aged, pleasant lady, Netra Jain.

"Namaste auntie….main saamne waale flat se Dr Malik ki wife hoon, aaj hi Mumbai aayi hoon…..mera naam Riddhima hai!"

"OH…achha? Tho tumhare husband Dr hain? Kai baar dekha hai unhey, par wo hamesha jaldi mein rehte hain….baat nahin huyi," Mrs Netra Jain replied

Riddhima struck a rapport with her neighbor and was soon back home, preparing breakfast with borrowed supplies from Mrs Jain's kitchen.

"Wow Riddhima! Yeh kya jadoo kiya tumney? Upma! Toast! Eggs! Coffee! Yeh kahan se aaya sab?" Armaan came out of the bathroom with a partially buttoned up his shirt.

"Tumhey aam khaane se matlab hai ya paidh gin ne se? Chalo let's eat….I am hungry too," she served breakfast in some disposable plates, "yeh lo…..aur mujhey kuch paise de do."

"Paise? Ab ghar ka khaana khaane ke liye bhi paise dene padhenge?" Armaan teased her as he sipped his coffee, "OHHH this feels so good…..ghar ke khaane ki baat hi kuch aur hai," Armaan licked his fingers as he gobbled up his breakfast.

"Bilkul dene padhenge paise….yaad rakho, chaahe ghar ki cheez ho ya bahar ki…..daam sab cheez ke dene padhte hain! Don't take anything for granted!" Riddhima pinched Armaan's nose.

"No way Riddhima! I can never take anything for granted…..aur tumhey tho kabhie nahin!Yeh lo…mera credit card….jo marzi aaye le aana….main chalta hoon….I will see you in the evening….please din mein aaraam karna….I don't want you falling sick….abhi 3 hafte hi huye hain tumhare miscarriage ko…..kuch din aur aaraam kar lo….tho…tho…tho," he had a mischievous look on his face.

"Tho kya?" Riddhima put her arm on his shoulder, "Tho kya doctor sahib?"

Armaan kissed her lips gently and whispered, "so I don't have to limit myself to a little kiss," he smiled wickedly and left for work.

Riddhima put on her invisible roller skates and got down to work as soon as Armaan left. She transformed their apartment from a four-walled barren structure to a warm and welcoming home over the next few hours. She purchased the bare essentials for their kitchen, bedroom and bathroom. She cleared the floors of Armaan's clothes and shoes; unpacked all the boxes and prepared dinner for the evening!

Armaan was pleasantly surprised when he walked in that evening, "Riddhima! Sach sach batao, tumney aaraam kiya ya nahin? Itna saara kaam ek hi din mein kaise kar liya?"

"Armaan….tum mujhey itney dino se jaante ho…..kya yeh nahin pata ki mere liye kaam hi sabse badhaa aaraam hai…..I am not myself, unless I am doing something…aur phir yeh hamara ghar hai….main chahti hoon ki hamara ghar hamare liye ek mandir jaisa ho…..jahan aate hi humein sukoon mil sakey, aur phir yahan se kahin bhi jaane ka mann nahin kare."

"Riddhima…I am the luckiest man in this world…..tumhare jaisi patni shayad hi kisi ki ho……patni se yaad aaya…..Friday ko mera dost Abhimanyu dinner par aayega….he wants to meet you as he could not come for our wedding…..chalo let's go shopping before all the stores close down," Armaan placed his bag down and freshened up before they left.

Over the next 2-3 days, Riddhima and Armaan spent a lot of time together fixing up and decorating their little nest. Armaan took a day off from work and helped arrange the furnishings to their taste. They even painted some of their walls colorful, a nice change from the drab off white paint before.

As they enjoyed decorating their first home, enjoy this song in the background:

"tumse milke" from "parinda"

Finally, when they were done, Armaan and Riddhima helped each other nail this sign outside their door,

"ARMAAN AUR RIDDHIMA KA GHAR"

Sangeeta
