part 20 : To Err is Human

Nasha Yeh Pyar Ka Nasha Hai
Yeh Meri Baat Yaaron Maano
Nashey Mein Yaar Doob Jao
Raho Na Hosh Mein Deewano
Ke Jabse Maine Tumko Dil Ye De Diya
Meetha meetha sa dard le liya……..

"Dr Khanna…..guitar tho aap khoob bajaa lete ho bhai….aur gaana bhi achcha khaasa gaa lete ho……lekin aap shayad bhool rahe hain ki 2 din pehle hi aap ek major surgery se guzre hain…..so now as the senior doctor here…..I order you to go back to bed…samjhe Dr Majnu?" Josh patted Angad's back and led him back to bed after his mini performance around the hospital wards.

"Thanks sir," Kripa walked over towards them and chided, "I am glad you scolded him…..Angad has been a most irresponsible patient….na apni dawa khaata hai….aur dekho Dr Josh….apna guitar lekar rock star ki tarah ghoom raha hai poore hospital mein!"

"Dr KRIPA SHARMA!" Josh folded his arms and grinned, "This is all your fault!"

"My fault?" she was puzzled.

"Yeh baat apne aap se pooncho…….come on Angad….let's go back," Josh smiled at an aghast Kripa and carried Angad's guitar.

Angad grinned back at her as he walked away, "you know….the doctor is always responsible....bechara patient kya kare?" Josh and Angad chuckled all the way back to his room.

"OK Angad….why don't you lie down…..can I get some pain medicine for you? Looks like you are in pain."

"Why not sir?" Angad heaved a sigh and winced a little as he stretched his body on the bed, "you know the drugs do make me feel good in a way……you know what I mean? Nasha….ek nasha se chaaya rehta hai aaj kal."

"Buddy…I hope it is Kripa's love," Josh injected a dose of morphine into Angad's veins and capped the needle back, "and not the effect of these drugs."

Angad was fast asleep as the medicine seeped through his brain.

"Drugs?" Prithvi walked in, overhearing the last part of Josh's statement.

"Oh Prithvi? You are back?"

"Jee sir…..Rahul and I just got back….yahan Angad ko dekhne aaya tha…..lekin lagta hai Angad tho so gaya hai."

"Yeah…he needs some rest," Josh threw away the disposable needle and turned around, "any interesting cases on the field?"

"Oh yes sir….." Prithvi nodded.

"Ok…let's not disturb Angad….we can discuss the cases outside."

"Angad is totally knocked out!" Prithvi stared at the semi unconscious man on the bed.

"Hota hai Prithvi…..yeh nasha hota hi aisa hai," Josh grinned and led the way out. Prithvi followed, perplexed by Josh's statements about 'drugs'….'nasha'….yeh kya ho raha hai?

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

"Riddhima…..right now…..I am the happiest man on this planet," Armaan placed his arm around her, both still perched on the tree top.

"Sach Armaan? Ab wapas chalein?" she rested her head on his shoulder and asked.

"Nahin abhi nahin….I don't want this moment to end….jaanti ho Riddhima…..main kabhie soch bhi nahin sakta tha ki Internship meri zindagi ka sabse suhaana waqt hoga."

"Kyun?"

"I did not want to come to Sanjeevani," Armaan sighed and looked down.

"Really? But why? 5 saal medical college ke baad internship kyun nahin karna chaahte the?" Riddhima was shocked by Armaan's statement.

"Because dad wanted me to come to Sanjeevani."

"So? That's good…he wanted you to train at the best place in india."

"No! He just wanted me to carry on the tradition of the Mallik khandaan! He never cared for what I wanted……it was all about his dreams……main tho shayad doctor bhi nahin bantaa," he added softly.

"Nahin Armaan….aise nahin bolte……you are a good doctor." Riddhima could not believe how bitter Armaan was against his dad.

"You don't know my dad…..he is a very successful Plastic surgeon…..he was always a good student….a bright surgeon at the Sanjeevani…..aur wo chaate hain ki main bhi unki tarah banoo……par main unki tarah nahin…apni tarah ban na chaata hoon."

"I know….tumhare papa Dr Abhimanyu Mallik hain na? Papa ko jaante hain wo……but Armaan all parents want the best for their kids….that is what Abhimanyu uncle wants too."

"Tum mujhse pyaar karti ho ya mere dad se?" Armaan frowned and withdrew his arm from her shoulder.

"Of course tumse Armaan…..but you are a part of your dad…of your family…..tho main tumhein tumhare parivaar se alag kaise dekh sakti hoon?"

"Wrong Riddhima! You know…I hate your dad….but I love you….tum apne papa ki parchaaiyee nahin ho!"

"ARMAAN!" Riddhima was offended, "how can you hate my dad?"

"Riddhima….wo…wo," he held his head in his hands, "Ok…may be I don't hate him…..but I..I…don't really care for him you see….wo hamesha mujhey insult karte rehte hain…..he has some grudge against me or something."

"Armaan…..that's not true…..it's all in your head…..…let's go now," she tried to climb down but stopped once she realized how high they were above the ground….ARMAAN! She screamed.

"Kya hua?" he asked as his foot stepped on a branch below.

"Mujhey darr lagta hai…I don't like heights!" She squeezed her eyes shut in fear. Armaan smiled and grabbed her arms. Before she realized, her body was hanging from his shoulder as he cautiously climbed down the tree.

Riddhima shrieked all the way down the tree; her arms tightened around his strong back muscles.

He set her feet down on the ground on arrival but she did not let go and held on to him like a vine around a tree.

'Riddhima! Riddhima! Open your eyes….Riddhima!" Armaan shook her shoulders, "why are you so petrified?"

She hugged him tightly, "don't leave me Armaan……never leave me alone"

"Of course not…I will never leave you Riddhima," he stroked her hair gently and caressed his face against them, "par aisa kya hua jo tum aise over react kar rahi ho?"

"Armaan," she pulled back, "abhi oopar jo humney baatien ki…..na jaane kyun darr lagta hai mujhey…..aisa lagta hai…lagta hai." She was still trembling fearfully.

"Riddhima," he pulled her closer, "bahut darr pok ho tum…..jab mujhse ladhai karne mein nahin darrti thi tho pyaar karne mein kyun darrti ho?"

"Armaan…..what if ….what if our parents don't approve of what we are doing?"

"Chill Riddhima…..I think I know what you need."

'What?" she asked.

"Some beer or wine," he chuckled, "take it easy sweetheart…..itni chinta karogi tho ulcer ho jaayega."

"Armaan…..get out of here," she pushed him away," my father would kill me if he found me drinking and that too on the hospital premises."

"Even if you are off duty?" Armaan asked.

"Papa kehte hain ek doctor ko hamesha duty ke liye tayyar hona chaahiye…..there is nothing worse than a doctor caught drunk."

Armaan looked away and cursed Dr Gupta, "sasurjee…..sab se pehle aapko hi pilaana padhega……why are you so stuck up?"

"Kuch kaha tumne Armaan?" Riddhima asked.

"Nahin," he smiled sarcastically, "bas soch raha tha ki kitna samajhdaar sasur milne waala hai mujhey….kitne oonche khayalaat hain…..wah wah…."

"Sasurjee?" Riddhima blushed, "sacch Armaan?"

"Package deal hai na…..koi choice nahin hai mere paas." Armaan grinned and then rolled his eyes when Riddhima blushed again at the thought of her father being Armaan's sasur.

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

"Angad….kab tak sote rahoge?" Kripa had waited patiently at his bedside all evening as he snored away.

"Hmmm?" he rubbed his eyes and peered at her, "tum abhi tak yahin ho? Don't you have other patients to see?"

"I have seen all of them multiple times…aur kar kya rahi hoon tab se? Utho…..aur mujh se baatein karo," she tugged on his hand.

"Ok baba……ladhai pyaar mein badal gayi lekin tumhare orders khatam nahin huye…….give me a hand first," he winced in pain as Kripa helped prop him up against the pillows.

"Bilkul nashe mein lag rahe ho tum," she commented on his wobbliness, "jaise koi sharaabi ho." She chuckled.

"DON'T EVER SAY THAT AGAIN KRIPA!"

She was stunned to see the sudden change in his tone and demeanor. He sat up straight with an angry expression and pulled his hands away from hers.

"Oh sorry….main tho mazaak kar rahi thi." She was a bit taken aback.

"It's Ok Kripa…..please never call me a sharaabi…..aur jo bhi kehna hai keh lo mujhey."

"Oh..Ok," she held his hand, 'kya baat hai? Koi puraani yaad judi hai?"

"Kuch aisa hi samajh lo," he said dryly.

"Angad….I..I know you have no family……but," she hesitated, she had never been intimidated by his anger before but now she expected only love and compassion in his eyes- after all love was supposed to change people, make them less bitter- but the rage in his eyes told her that even though they had confessed their love for each other, there was so much about him she did not know. Just like one is unaware of the vast universe beneath the surface of an ocean, she was unaware of his past, his life, the reason behind his cynicism and bitterness……

"Tho tumhein pataa chal gaya mere baare mein?" he asked.

"Haan…wo jab tumhari surgery huyi thi….tab Armaan ne," she paused, trying to hold her tears as she could still recall how devastated she had been on finding that Angad was an orphan.

"Sorry Kripa….I should not get upset at you," he clasped her hands and kissed them tenderly, "mera baap ek sharaabi tha Kripa," he buried his face in her palms and mumbled, "he abused my mother……roz shaam ko ghar aakar wo meri maa ko maarta tha….bahut maarta tha…..main 7-8 saal ka hi tha….jab ek din us haraami ne meri maa ko peet peet kar maar daala Kripa." She felt her palms soak with his warm tears as he recounted those tragic memories of his childhood.

"Angad," she stroked his head with her fingers and controlled her own tears.

"And then one day," he looked up and swallowed his tears, "and then one day…. he killed himself after drinking illicit liquor…..I think he was so guilty after killing my mother…..ki us darrpok ne khud apni jaan le li….aur ek 8 saal ke bachche ko akela chhod gaya."

"Angad…..please….don't…let's not talk about this….it's not good for you to strain yourself," she felt guilty and responsible for uncovering his past wounds.

He placed his head in her lap and encircled his arms around her waist, "Kripa….jab tak tum mere saath ho….mujhey kuch nahin hoga."

"Haan Angad…..main hamesha tumhare saath rahoongi....I will never leave you," she wiped her tears and ran her fingers through his thick hair. As they held each other, she thought, "Angad….main tumhein apne pyaar se bilkul badal doongi…..tumhare andar ki saari kadwaahat apne pyaar se dho doongi……ek din tumhare andar sirf pyaar aur khushi hogi…..nafrat aur zeher nahin." She kissed his head and rested her head on his. Angad was fast asleep in her lap; never before had he found such comfort in his life. The boy who had lost his mother's lap at a tender age, had finally found the warmth he had craved for all his life in his lady love's arms……he held onto her as firmly as he could, fearful of letting go.

DINNER TIME AT JOSH AND SIMONE'S:

"So how was everyone's day?" Dr Gupta asked the group of interns (minus Angad and Kripa) at the dining table.

"Great sir!" Rahul quipped.

"Good….batao kya kiya aaj?" Dr Gupta smiled at his favorite intern.

"Well sir…Dr Josh sent Prithvi and me out to the field…waise tho cases koi khaas interesting nahin the….lekin ek bahut achcha idea aaya hai mujhey sir," Rahul sipped his water and slammed his glass excitedly.

"Haan haan batao bhai," Dr Gupta was all ears, while the others looked away, hoping to discuss something other than medicine at the dining table. Armaan and Riddhima sat across from each other exchanging furtive glances here and there. Armaan's gaze was fixated on Riddhima's face, her slight head tilt, intermittent blushes as she caught him staring at her. She had changed into another suit and hidden away the new pink but mango stained suit from her mother's curious eyes.

Padma could not help noticing the interplay of eye glances and the silent exchanges between her daughter and the handsome young man across from her. She was happy for her daughter…..at last she was getting to be a normal girl after all these years…..under Shashank's constant vigilance during her medical college days, it would have been impossible but now that Riddhima was an intern and more independent, she would hopefully get more opportunities to enjoy her life and may be even find true love.

Josh and Simone played footsies while Rahul's sermon on how to use the population of Sanjeevgarh to conduct studies on various projects exploding in his scientific mind. Dr Gupta was of course very intrigued by some of Rahul's ideas, "brilliant Rahul….that would be a great study…our study population is large enough…we can certainly conduct a well controlled study here….I will talk to our main researcher at the SMI when I get back….you can work with him…BRILLIANT!" Dr Gupta commended Rahul and then got up to answer his page, "excuse me…."

"Kripa ne dinner nahin kiya?" Prithvi asked once Dr Gupta left the table to answer his call.

"Wo Angad ke liye khaana le gayi thi….shayad dono saath hi khaa lenge hospital mein," Simone answered.

"Saath?" Prithvi asked with dismay.

"Yeah…she is on night duty Prithvi…so don't worry," Josh intervened. Josh was aware that Prithvi harbored feelings for Kripa, but there was something about Prithvi which made him uncomfortable. Perhaps that is why he had encouraged Kripa get closer to Angad, who Josh had high regard for. Even if Angad was a bit materialistic and could be cynical at times, he had more integrity than Prithvi, who was nice on the outside but resentful and jealous of Angad on the inside.

"Sorry everyone…..there is an emergency in Mumbai…..Padma…chalo…we need to get back right now," Dr Gupta slipped his jacket on and headed towards the door.

"Papa….kya hua?" Riddhima was jolted out of her trance like state.

"Chief Minister sahib ki tabiyat theek nahin hai….they are sending a helicopter to get me…chalo Padma…let's go….bye everyone….good luck for the rest of the rotation," Dr Gupta kissed Riddhima's forehead and was out the door within seconds. Padma obediently followed him after hugging her daughter and whispering, "khush raho beti."

………………………………………………………………………………………………

"OK TIME FOR CELEBRATION GUYS!" Josh pulled out a champagne bottle from the closet after the Gupta's had departed.

"Are we celebrating their departure?" Armaan laughed aloud but wiped his grin when he realized no one; particularly Riddhima was not amused by his sense of humor.

Josh chuckled and raised his glass, "no guys….this is to celebrate Simone and mine 5th wedding anniversary! Yoohoo!"

"Yay!" everyone clapped and held their glassed to toast the couple.

"Can I have apple juice?" Riddhima asked hesitantly, "waise yahan alcohol allowed hai sir?"

"Riddhima…it is just a little champagne…..no one gets drunk on this stuff….waise bhi night duty Kripa ki hai…..she is not here….so you guys don't have to worry," Josh reassured them and sipped his drink. Josh and Simone kissed and placed their glasses against each other's lips. Armaan could not help admiring the couple in love. He glanced at Riddhima lovingly and gulped his drink, "THIS IS TO ALL LOVERS IN THE WORLD!" Armaan raised his empty glass and celebrated the occasion.

Prithvi and Rahul joined in with a few sips.

A confused Riddhima just stood there with her full glass in hand.

"Come on Riddhima…darro mat…thodi si champagne hi tho hai," Armaan whispered in her ear. He was in seventh heaven now that sasurjee was out of the picture. He was dying to see a relaxed and less worried Riddhima, hoping that the alcohol would loosen her up a bit.

Rahul decided to call it a night as his mind was working on the new research project. Prithvi sneaked out towards the hospital to keep an eye on Angad and Kripa.

Josh and Simone were too busy with each other. Armaan watched a hesitant Riddhima take a few sips of her drink. To his surprise, she did not stop at a few sips. Before he realized, she was gulping the last few drops of the sparkling drink.

'Arrey Riddhima….aur nahin baba…..ek do sip bahut hain tumhare liye," Armaan pulled her glass away. The damage had been done. Unaccustomed to drinking, even the one glass of champagne was enough to transport Riddhima to a different planet.

"Chalo bahar chalte hain Arrmaan," Riddhima drawled.

"What happened Armaan?" Josh pulled away from his wife's embrace and looked at Riddhima's smiling face.

"Kuch nahin sir…we just need some fresh air," Armaan held Riddhima's hand and headed towards the door.

"Is she alright?" Josh asked and the stared at her empty glass, "Oh NO!"

"I will handle her sir…..don't worry…..i have handled enough such people in college," Armaan smiled.

"Ok….I trust you man," Josh patted his back, "take care of her…you know what I mean?"

Josh let the two lovers leave the house; he could have easily intervened but he wanted them to deal with this situation themselves….after all this would not be the first time one of them would be in trouble in life……it was up to them and their love to rise above the crisis. He knew Armaan was a decent guy and would never take advantage of Riddhima. Perhaps after this situation, Riddhima would develop more trust for Armaan and not be as hesitant about their love as he had sensed so far.

"Riddhima…..kya…kya kar rahi ho?" An embarrassed Armaan walked out with his unsteady partner.

"Chalo…tumhare room mein chalte hain," she slurred happily.

"Room mein?" he was shocked.

"Haan….hum tum ek kamre mein bandho ho? Bhooool gaye kyaaaa?" she laughed hysterically.

"Baap re…isey tho sach much chadh gayi hai," he held her closely and headed towards his room, "chalo….room mein jaakar kuch paani aur coffee pilaata hoon tumhein….let's go." He saw a few patients and hospital staff loitering around on the grounds; it was best to take Riddhima away from their curious eyes.

"Arrmaaan….tum kitne achche ho," her rickety gait was becoming more unsteady now. Armaan finally lifted her on his shoulder and ran into his room, making sure no one was watching her in that situation.

He shut his door behind them and placed her on his bed.

"Armaan….don't leave me," she grabbed his hand and pulled him over.

"Let me make some coffee for you Riddhima…..do you want some water?" he smiled at her and asked.

"No….i want you Armaan….pleeeese…..idhar aao mere paas," she pulled him over so he landed on top of her. They were locked in each other's eyes, their warmth bathing each other's senses and driving them into frenzy.

Riddhima pulled him closer and whispered, 'kiss me Armaan.'

Please watch this wonderful VM by Muniza on "zara zara touch me' as Riddhima has completely lost control of her emotions……will Armaan resist or give in to temptation??

………………………………………………………………………………………………

"Angad….one more bite…please," Kripa held a spoonful of rice in front of him.

"Nahin Kripa…..I am full." Angad turned his face away.

"Khaaoge nahin tho theek kaise hoge?"

"Theek kaun hona chaahta hai?" he asked huskily and put the spoon away, "main chaahta hoon yeh pal kabhie na guzre….main bimaar….aur tum meri dawa."

"Angad…you are too much," she blushed.

He pulled her closer and was about to kiss her when she heard someone shuffle outside their door.

The hesitant footsteps lingered outside the door for a few minutes but then faded as the eavesdropper had walked away. Kripa went to the door and looked around, "kaun hoga?"

"Koi nahin hai Kripa….it's in your head."

"Nahin Angad….I heard someone."

"Ok…can I have my kiss?" he sighed.

"Mujhey aisa kyun kaga jaise koi hamari baatein sun raha tha….aur phir bhaag gaya," she bit her lower lip.

"Oh Kripa….must be someone jealous of our love," he chuckled and lay back on his pillow. Soon, he was fast asleep.

"Hey bhagwan…phir so gaye tum? I need to get him off these narcotics," Kripa picked her stuff and threw away the leftovers, her mind still wondering why would anyone be so sneaky….maybe it was a hospital employee and did not want to disturb them….maybe it was nurse Sweety….Oh well, she thought and kissed Angad goodnight and left to get some rest herself.

………..to be contd….
