part 36: To Err is Human

RECAP: Shashank walked in with a stern expression; Abhimanyu stood still expecting Shashank to walk towards him to shake his hand……

The two men took a few reluctant steps towards each other and were finally face to face. They stared down at each other with hands in their pockets. Each waited for the other to extend their hand for a handshake but neither took the initiative.

"It's been many years Shank…I mean…Dr Shashank Gupta," Abhimanyu broke the wall of silence.

"Yes it has Abhi…uh..I mean Dr Abhimanyu Mallik!" Shashank replied curtly.

"You look older than I expected," Abhimanyu remarked, "lagta hai academics ki duniya kuch zyaada hi stressful hai," he chuckled, "kabhie meri clinic mein aao….I am sure we can take a few wrinkles off that handsome face."

Shashank clenched his teeth, "I think you forget a doctor's reputation and skill is reflected in his gray hair and wrinkles…..waise tum kya jaano?" he looked up and scrutinized the palatial house, "I think doctors like you have to prove their caliber with palaces like this." The smirk on his face irked Abhimanyu's pride.

"Tho khatte angooron ka saath abhi bhi nahin chhoda tumney?" Abhi retorted back.

"If you remember Abhee…I mean Abhimanyu…I never liked grapes even as a child…..looks like this youthful body of yours has not been able to mask the attrition of your gray cells!" Shashank said sardonically.

From a distance, Armaan and Riddhima watched their dad's heated discussion.

"Riddhima….it's so nice to see old friends talk to each other….I have a good feeling here," he kept his fingers crossed behind his back.

"Sorry Armaan….I think here I have to disagree…..dekho wo dono baat tho kar rahe hain lekin haath abhi bhi nahin milaya….na ek doosre ke gale lage….na jaane mujhey kyun lagta hai dono ek doosre ko pasand nahin karte," Riddhima sounded disappointed.

A light bulb went on in Armaan's head; he thought, "kahin iss liye tho Dr Gupta mujhse naaraaz rehte hain? If that's the case, I dislike him even more…..not dislike…I hate him down to my bone marrow !"

"Kya soch rahe ho Armaan?" Riddhima whispered.

"Kuch nahin," he did not want to burden her with this conclusion he had just arrived at.

BACK TO THE DADS:

Abhimanyu's self esteem could not handle the insult on his gray cells; he had always prided himself on his intelligence more than his looks or his wealth, and that too at the hands of his arch rival.

"Ahaa! Ab samajh aaya Dr Gupta….khud ko angoor pasand nahin hain….tho iss liye apni beti ko lagaa diya mere bhole bhaale bte ke peeche…haa…what a plan!" Abhimanyu mocked at him.

Shashank was stunned at the accusation, "what rubbish? Kya kaha tumney? Maine apni beti ko lagaa diya tumhare bte ke peeche?"

"Well….that's what I was told…that you are coming to meet us to ask our son's hand in marriage for your daughter," Abhimanyu shrugged his shoulders.

Shashank was infuriated, "That's impossible! Tumhare jaise awara bte ke saath main apni beti ki shaadi sapne mein bhi nahin kar sakta…in fact that would be my biggest NIGHTMARE!"

"What? Mera beta aur awara? Shanky….remember you are in my house…..I am being courteous here….you better take those words back!"

Shashank chuckled, "awara…and good-for-nothing son of yours….it is unfortunate he was accepted at Sanjeevani thanks to the governing board who you tempted with your donation….or should I call it bribe!"

"Shanky! How does it matter how he was accepted?….I have faith in my son….he will do very well at Sanjeevani….after all he is the son of a brilliant surgeon…and grandson of the best surgeon Mumbai has ever had!"

"Well….time will tell how successful your son will be! I have serious doubts about him…..and don't even think about an alliance with Riddhima….meri beti bahut hoshiyar aur honhaar hai….Armaan jaisa ladka usey deserve nahin karta!" Shashank looked up and gave a dirty look to Riddhima, who was watching them intently. Both Armaan and Riddhima knew at that moment that things were not going in their favor.

In the meantime, Gauri and Padma had hit it off like long lost friends. Years ago, they had never connected with each other as Gauri was too busy trying to establish herself as a young and upcoming professional. She had a tendency to look down upon stay-at-home women but over the years she had come to terms with reality and even wondered at times if Armaan would have been closer to her and more focused in life if she had stayed home during his growing years. Gauri and Padma loved the idea of becoming mother-in-laws to their respective children and agreed to work on their husbands regarding Armaan and Riddhima's marriage.

The two mothers sensed that their husbands were in the middle of a verbal duel. They decided to walk towards them and cool their hot headed husbands.

"Hi Shashank! So nice to see you after all these years," Gauri gave him friendly hug which surprised Shashank for a second. He had never exchanged any warm vibes with her before; but her hug did indeed thaw some of the frozen emotions between the men.

"Oh…hello Gauri….you look nice….as…as," he hesitated, "as always."

"Thanks Shashank….Armaan aapki bahut tareef karta hai," Gauri lied.

"Really?" Abhimanyu interjected, "I have never heard Armaan talk about him."

"Wo…wo," Gauri turned red at her husband's undiplomatic comment, "Abhi….you are always busy….he mentione dit to me."

"Hello Padma…how are you?" Abhi turned his attention to his old nurse-friend and smiled.

"I am fine Abhimanyu," Padma smiled.

"You look good! Pehle se bhi zyada sunder ho gayi ho," Abhimanyu purposely complimented her as he knew Shashank had always been insecure about their friendship.

Padma felt a little awkward but nodded gently to thank him.

"Aap sab tho jaante hain ki Abhi har insaan ko plastic surgeon ki nigaahon se dekhta hai," Gauri tried to ease the awkwardness between the four of them.

"You are right Gauri…..main tho bhool gaya tha ki Shanky apni wife ke baare mein kitna possessive hai….sorry bhai," Abhimanyu laughed and then raised his hands, "welcome Dr and Mrs Gupta….aap hamare garib khaane mein aaye….yeh hamari khush naseebi hai…what would you like to drink? Scotch? Wine? Champagne? Soft drinks? Juice?"

"No thanks….we are fine…..waise bhi humein interns ko wish karke wapas jaana hai," Shashank shook his hand and looked at Padma, "chalo Padma….sab interns ko ek baar milkar aate hain….phir ghar chalte hain." Padma complied and followed her husband.

Gauri glanced at Abhimanyu and raised her eyebrow, "Armaan ki baat kahi aapne?" she whispered.

"I did! He refused!" Abhimanyu said coldly and walked away towards the other guests.

Padma looked back at Gauri and gestured to find if the men had talked about the wedding but Gauri just shook her head in dismay.

Shashank signaled Riddhima to join him while he talked with other doctors from Sanjeevani. A disappointed Armaan decided to talk with his dad.

"Dad…can I talk to you?" Armaan cornered Abhimanyu while he was getting a refill on his drink.

"Yes son?"

"Aapne Dr Gupta se baat ki?"

"Haan ki!"

"Kya kaha unhone shaadi ke baare mein?"

"Bhool jao shaadi ke baare mein Armaan….I don't think he will agree," Abhimanyu sipped his drink.

"But why dad?"

"Armaan! Behtar hoga tum na hi poncho tho….I know Shanky since childhood….he is a stubborn man…..he won't budge….just forget her and move on in life….waise bhi yeh waqt apna career par focus karne ka hai…..don't waste any more time on girls….they are too distracting!"

"But dad," Armaan was frustrated, "it's not a question of any girl…I love Riddhima….and I will marry no one else but her!"

"MY ADVISE….FORGET HER! Excuse me son….I have to answer this call," Abhimanyu stepped aside to answer his cell phone.

Armaan mumbled and grumbled to himself, "dad….have you ever had time for me? Yeh meri zindagi ka sawal hai….aap help nahin karenge tho mujhey hi kuch karna padhega!"

An infuriated Armaan walked towards Angad and handed him a guitar, "help me here man….sing something that will knock the wind out of these two stubborn old men!"

"You want me to punch them?" Angad's eyes popped at the suggestion.

"Not literally yaar…..but sing something so they know that I am not giving up on my love because of their arrogance and ego hassles."

"Kya hua….shaadi ke liye nahin maane?" Angad took the guitar from Armaan and asked.

"NO! As if I care though….kya kar lenge wo dono khoosat? I will run away with Riddhima if I need to," Armaan replied irately.

"Bhaag jaayega?" Angad chuckled, "yeh sab chhod kar?"

"Yes….I will….I don't care about anything…I just want to marry Riddhima!"

Angad shook his head and thought cynically, "bigdaa hua nawab hai….he has no respect for the things he has," as he strummed the guitar, his eyes fell on Kripa's radiant face, "kya main bhi Kripa ke liye sab kuch chhod kar bhaag sakta hoon? Nahin….mujhey bhaagne ki zaroorat hi nahin padhegi…..because I will have her and everything else in this world too! May be I am luckier than Armaan….warna main tho hamesha isey hi lucky samajhta tha……..OK buddy….let me play something your sasur ji will never forget!" He smiled as he recalled the lyrics of the song he was planning to sing.

Armaan took a microphone and made an announcement, "Ladies and Gentlemen….can I have your attention please….on behalf of all the interns at Sanjeevani, I would like to welcome all the senior doctors from Sanjeevani to this party…..and as a gesture of our appreciation to our seniors, we have organized a small program for all of you….let's give a big hand to Dr Angad Khanna…..my best friend and one of the most talented singers of the group….HERE YOU GO…ANGAD!"

Angad took off his jacket, loosened his tie and came forward with his guitar, "this song is dedicated to my friend Armaan….and his lady love," he winked at Armaan as Riddhima went red in the face. She squeezed Kripa's hand and whispered, 'yeh kya keh raha hai Kripa…sab ke saamne?"

"Kisi ka naam tho nahin liya na…just relax Riddhima and enjoy the song," Kripa looked forward to Angad's song and reassured her friend.

Shashank and Abhimanyu stiffened but had no choice. With indifference written on their face, they stood motionless as Angad started strumming and humming one of my favorite songs….Doli mein sajaake from 'Saawariya'

Armaan took the cue and walked towards Riddhima. He stretched his hand and asked her to dance with him. Riddhima was in a quandary; she looked at her mother who nodded in consent. She avoided eye contact with her father as she knew he would be upset. She hesitated but Armaan's pleading eyes forced her to say yes. His melting gaze had a mesmerizing effect on her and as always she forgot where she was when his arms encircled and swayed her away from the crowd…….

owwwowoww

Doli mein bitha ke

Lejayega ek roj tera udke jiya

Saawariya haa haaaa

Soon, other interns and couples were swaying to Angad's peppy number. Rahul-Muskaan, Ranbir with Hinna and Ouma (alternately), Atul with Anjali, Kartik with Keerti were all on the dance floor. Kripa stood with Padma and clapped with the beat of the song. Angad's gaze stayed fixated on Kripa and the two were lost in their own dream land where they were getting married amidst pomp and honor……

Doli mein bitha ke
Sitaro se sajake
Zamane se churake
Lejayega

Armaan made it obvious to the senior men that he was serious about Riddhima and there was no way he would give up his quest to marry her. Riddhima enjoyed herself in the warmth of his arms till the music finally came to a stop….

Saawariya haa haaaa
Saawariya haa haa haa
Saawariya

Abhimanyu gave Gauri a sharp look and whispered into her ear, "yeh Armaan kya tamasha kar raha hai?"

"He is serious Abhi….samjho usey," Gauri retorted.

"Kya filmi style mein threaten kar raha hai humein….anyways….he can marry who he wants….as long as he does something with his career…..if he really wants to marry her…so be it," Abhimanyu gave up and thought this way Shashank being the father of the bride, would always be indebted to him. In a way, it would be his victory over Shanky once again.

"Bahut ho gaya tamasha! Let's go now!" Shashank ordered Padma, "mujhey vishwas nahin hota hamari beti itna gir sakti hai!"

"Dance hi tho kiya hai usney….kya gunaah kiya hai? Internship ki opening night mein tho prize bhi jeeta tha usney," Padma reminded him.

"Haan lekin aise Armaan ke gale lag rahi thi jaise….jaise…uska," he paused.

"jaise usey chaahti ho?" Padma asked.

"He does not deserve her Padma."

"Shashank…..Armaan bahut achcha ladka hai…..mujhey bhi bahut pasand hai…….hamari bhalai isi mein hai ki hum unke rishte ko kabool kar lein," for the first time in her life, Padma had had the courage to counter her over-bearing husband.

Shashank was stunned by his wife's defiance; Padma had never challenged his decisions before. He was sure it was because of Abhimanyu. Despite all these years, she probably still harbored feelings for him; that is why she was able to stand up against him.

"Kyun nahin pasand hoga tumhein?" He smiled sarcastically, "after all he is Abhimanyu's son!"

Shashank's words pierced Padma like an arrow; she swallowed her tears and replied softly, "tamasha tho aap kar rahe hain yahan….dekhiye sab interns hamari taraf dekh rahe hain….please program khatam ho jaane dee jiye."

Dr Gupta almost turned to leave but he paused when he heard his name.

"DR GUPTA! Kahan jaa rahe hain aap? Abhi tho awards presentation baaki hai sir…..just like you present us all with the intern of the month…..we interns have voted for the best senior doctor at Sanjeevani! Please sir….don't leave!" Armaan pleaded on the microphone. He was pleased that he had managed to irk Dr Gupta by dancing intimately with his daughter. At least, now the cards were on the table and there was no more confusion at what Armaan and Riddhima wanted. Riddhima had of course felt very guilty after the dance and had disappeared in a corner, out of her parent's sight.

Dr Gupta had no choice but to take a seat.

"Ok before the award presentation…..we have a dance number by the women interns of our group….and the person leading the dance is my good friend …..Dr KRIPA SHARMA!"

Kripa was surprised as she had no idea about the dance, "Armaan kya keh raha hai?" She asked Muskaan, "dance? Maine na practice ki hai…aur wo bhi saree mein?"

"Worry not jee!" Muskaan smiled, "main shuru karti hoon….mujhey bahut saare dances aate hain….tum mere saath saath karna…OK?"

"Ok.." Kripa agreed. They pulled the other women- Ouma, Hinna, Anjali into the dance. Riddhima, who skulked behind a pillar, was dragged in by Rahul to join the group.

Muskaan led the women to this foot tapping Punjabi number…meethi meethi from 'aap ki khatir'

O O O O O ....
Meethi Meethi Baatan Karke
Chand Mulaakataan Karke
Meethi Meethi Baatan Karke
Chand Mulaakataan Karke
Dilasa De Gaya
Dil Maahiya Lay Gaya
O Rabba Mera Dil Maahiya Lay Gaya
Dil Maahiya Lay Gaya
O Rabba Mera Dil Maahiya Lay Gaya
Meethi Meethi Baatan Karke

Meethi Meethi Baatan Karke
Chand Mulaakataan Karke
Dilasa De Gaya
Dil Maahiya Lay Gaya
O Rabba Mera Dil Maahiya Lay Gaya
Dil Maahiya Lay Gaya
O Rabba Mera Dil Maahiya Lay Gaya

O Sili Sili Raaten Katti Nahi Hai
Yeh Duuriyan Kyon Mit Ti Nahi Hai
Nazdeekiyon Mein Bhi Faasalen Hai
Betaabiyon Kyon Katt Ti Nahi Hai
O Rab Teri Mehar Jo Ho Jaaye
Meri Zindadi Bhi Sanvar Jaaye
Yeh Mera Ishq Nikhar Jaaye
Meethi Meethi Baatan Karke
Chand Mulaakataan Karke
Dilasa De Gaya
Dil Maahiya Lay Gaya
O Rabba Mera Dil Maahiya Lay Gaya
Dil Maahiya Lay Gaya
O Rabba Mera Dil Maahiya Lay Gaya

Akhh Da Ishaara Chal Kar Lay Tu
Chori Chori Dil Ki Gal Kar Lay Tu
Akhh Da Ishaara Chal Kar Lay Tu
Chori Chori Dil Ki Gal Kar Lay Tu
Akhh Da Ishaara Chal Kar Lay Tu
Chori Chori Dil Ki Gal Kar Lay Tu
O Haale Jiya Mein Kaise Bataaun
Ab Toh Bichhauda Seh Nahi Paaun
Tum Hi Tum Ho Meri Dhadkan Mein
Meri Saanson Mein Meri Tadpan Mein
Main Na Jaanu Ki Gal Hain
Ho Pal Pal Mann Mein Hulchul Hain
Mere Iss Dard Ka Tu Hall Hain
Meethi Meethi Baatan Karke
Chand Mulaakataan Karke
Dilasa De Gaya
Dil Maahiya Lay Gaya
O Rabba Mera Dil Maahiya Lay Gaya

At the end of the dance, even the men joined the women as the senior doctors enjoyed the talented group of interns.

As everyone clapped and cheered for the women interns, two familiar faces walked through the front door.

"JOSH! DR JOSH IS HERE!" They all echoed enthusiastically, "and DR SI MONE TOO!"

Josh's entry increased the 'enjoyment-index' of the room. Shashank and Abhimanyu were soon outnumbered by the number of doctors who were thoroughly savoring the party. Padma and Gauri commented on how this new batch of interns was really unique and knew how to balance out the 'too serious' image of the Institute.

Josh was aware of the Abhimanyu-Shashank rivalry and was bemused to see the two icons in the surgical field under the same roof.

"Hey guys!" he patted Angad and Armaan's backs, "looks like you have a wonderful party going on here."

"Thanks for coming sir….we are really grateful to you," Armaan shook his hand, "I know you were busy."

"Arre bhai tumhare batch ke liye kuch bhi kar sakta hoon main," Josh winked.

"What's special about our batch?" Angad asked.

"Tum sab dilwaale log ho….sirf dimaag se hi nahin dil se bhi soch te ho….and that's why I know you all will be the best doctors Sanjeevani has ever churned out."

"Yeh baat mere dad aur Riddhima ke dad ko samjhaa sakte hain sir?" Armaan asked.

"Ha…ha," Josh chuckled, "those two men are very stubborn….and thick headed….I know them both….so do what you have to….leave the rest to destiny……dekhna sab theek ho jaayega….chalo let's get the party rolling….hey Angad pass me the guitar….let's rock and roll guys!"

Josh hung the guitar around his neck and took charge of the microphone and control of the room. His booming voice and towering personality shushed everyone, "Good evening everyone…..I want everyone to wear their dancing shoes and forget all their miseries…their differences," he glanced at Shashank and Abhimanyu, "and dance on this number with me…so all the couples……on the dance floor OK…LET'S ROCK!"

Please enjoy this wonderful VM by the talented Krina Shah….

( Gori Gori Gori Gori, Gori Gori
Kabhi Kabhi Kahin Kahin Chori Chori )...(2)
Chhup Chhup Ke Tum Mila Karo
Pyari Pyari Baatein Vaatein Kiya Karo
Par Yun Na Milna Kisi Se Kabhi, Hamare Siva
Gore Gore Gore Gore, Gore Gore, Bhole Bhole Naye Naye Kore Kore
Dekho Dekho Hum Dono Meet Hain, Suno Suno Dil Ke Jo Geet Hain
Par Sunne Paaye Inhein Na Koii Hamare Siva
Gori Gori...Chori Chori
Gore Gore...Kore Kore

Josh's energetic number forced everyone to join in the dance. Even the senior doctors could not hold back. Angad-Kripa, Armaan-Riddhima, Rahul-Muskaan, Atul-Anjali, Kartik-Keerti, Ranbir with his two girlfriends, Ouma and Hinna twisted and danced fervently. Abhimanyu, who was fond of dance and music, pulled his wife into the group and let himself loose. Simone grabbed Shubhankar's hand and danced with him.

Jo Tum Ho Aa Gaye, To Sapney Chha Gaye
Jo Tum Ho Meharban To Rut Hai Javaan
Jo Hum Hai Mil Gaye, To Gul Hai Khil Gaye
Jo Hum Tum Hai Yahaan To Mahka Samaa
Bheegi Bheegi Bheeni Bheeni Hai Hawa
Khoi Khoi Soyee Soyee Hai Fiza
Dheere Dheere Hamein Ye Kya Ho Gaya
Haule Haule Hosh Hi Kho Gaya
Ab Na Rahein Tumhein Yaad Koi Bhi Hamaare Siva
Gori Gori...Chori Chori
Gore Gore...Kore Kore

Padma glanced at Shashank and asked him to join her in the dance. A reluctant Shashank gave in as the others urged him to the dance floor. An uptight Shashank was not too comfortable with dancing but to his surprise, Armaan and Riddhima grabbed his hands and demonstrated the steps to him.

Jo Hai Ye Dooriyan, To Hai Betabiyan
Jo Paas Aao Yahaan To Haazir Hai Jaan
Jo Tum Betaab Ho, To Ab Tum Ye Suno
Jo Tum Is Dil Mein Ho To Doori Kahaan
Zara Zara Jhuki Jhuki Si Nazar
Abhi Abhi Thodi Thodi Thi Idhar
Meethi Meethi Baatein Kaha To Kaho
Pare Lekin Kabhi Tum Raho
Kuchh Din Kaato Aur Zindagi Hamare Siva
Gori Gori...Chori Chori
Chhup Chhup..Hamaare Siva
Gore Gore...Kore Koreb Dekho Dekho Ham Dono...Koi Hamaare Siva
Gori Gori...Chori Chori
Gore Gore...Kore Kore

By the end of the number, Shashank had loosened a little bit and flashed a faint smile at Riddhima and Armaan. Padma was in seventh heaven; she recognized that distinct smile on her husband's face- it meant he was melting……

"KRIPA!" Angad yelled.

The dance had just finished and even before anyone could catch their breath, they saw that the lovely intern in a green saree had collapsed in Angad's arms……

….to be contd…..
