part 48 : To Err is Human

RECAP: As they all sat down for lunch, the new channel flashed the hottest story of the day.

A stunned silence fell on the table as the headlines blared on the news channel.

'HEADLINES NEWS CHANNEL HAS JUST BEEN INFORMED OF A MULTI-BILLION RUPEE  SCANDAL IN GURGAON WHERE POLICE HAVE ARRESTED SEVERAL PEOPLE FOR RUNNING A KIDNEY TRANSPLANT RACKET. KIDNEYS FROM MOST OF THE VICTIMS, WHO WERE THE POOR HAILING FROM THE NEARBY TOWNS, WERE TRANSPLANTED INTO CLIENTS FROM ABROAD AND INDIA. THE MAN ACCUSED OF THE SCANDAL, DR AMIT KUMAR WAS ARRESTED IN GURGAON TODAY BUT HAS DENIED ANY HAND IN CRIMINAL ACTIVITY. THERE ARE REPORTS OF OTHER DOCTORS INVOLVED IN THIS RACKET. SOME REPUTED SURGEONS FROM DELHI AND A KIDNEY SPECIALIST FROM JAIPUR, DR PRITHVI BOSE WAS CLOSELY ASSOCIATED WITH THIS SCANDAL. POLICE HAVE ALSO ARRESTED DR BOSE AT HIS HOME IN JAIPUR THIS MORNING!!! THE ARRESTS WERE PROMPTED BY A CALL TWO DAYS AGO BY AN ANONYMOUS CALLER FROM JAIPUR WHO WAS LURED INTO BUYING A KIDNEY FOR HIS FIANCEE AILING WITH KIDNEY FAILURE!'

Everyone froze in their seats as pictures of Dr Amit Kumar, Dr Prithvi Bose and other doctors associated with the racket flashed in front of their faces. Kripa had turned as white as a ghost; her world had come crashing down as Prithvi's innocent face mocked at her from the TV screen. Once again, she had failed to recognize his ulterior motives; had betrayed their friendship and once again, she had doubted Angad's opinion about Prithvi.

"Arre yeh Prithvi ka bachcha abhi bhi badla nahin," Armaan commented angrily and then looked over at Angad and conjectured, "two days ago? Anonymous caller from Jaipur? Kahin yeh chaand chu-ra-ane ke liye tho nahin keh rahe the tumhein Angad?"

Angad clenched his jaws and turned the TV off, "ab aap logon ko samajh aaya main Prithvi se door kyun rehna chaahta tha."

Gayatri and Suryabhan were dumbstruck themselves; they had treated Prithvi like a son when Kripa was in the hospital; they had welcomed him with open arms and even encouraged his alliance with Harshini. They had not questioned Angad's doubts about Prithvi the other night, but were now convinced that Angad had done the right thing by cutting off all relations with that man.

With a knot in her stomach and a nauseating feeling, Kripa felt the room spin around her like a vortex, sucking her into a vacuum of despair and desolation. She covered her mouth to hide her misery, but lost her balance and would have collapsed to the ground, had Riddhima not caught her from falling, "KRIPA!" Riddhima yelled. Angad rushed to her rescue and carried her to the couch.

Her worried parents and Armaan surrounded her as Kripa's head rested on Riddhima's lap.

"KRIPA!" Angad shook her, "PLEASE GET UP! SAB THEEK HO GAYA HAI….PRITHVI HAS BEEN ARRESTED…..HE WILL NEVER BOTHER US AGAIN."

Armaan fetched some water for her and helped her sit up as she regained consciousness.

With a pounding headache, she propped herself with difficulty and averted her gaze from Angad. She had let him down once again by doubting his views on Prithvi. All along, she thought, Angad still harbored resentment against Prithvi after the drug episode and perhaps was envious of her friendship with Prithvi. Angad had done the right thing-she shuddered at the thought of being a participant in this heinous crime.

Angad squeezed her hands and looked into her eyes, "Kripa…..I am sorry…I never told you about this before.......I admit that I was guilty of considering this route as an option for your transplant……….I met with Dr Amit Kumar……and even consented to the procedure."

Kripa's bloodshot eyes were startled at Angad's confession. For a moment, she stared at him angrily for even entertaining such a thought.

"But I couldn't do it Kripa," he continued poignantly, "I couldn't trade your soul for a kidney……I knew you would never forgive me if I did that," softened her anger. Tears of joy rolled down her eyes as Angad sat before her with his head lowered like a guilty offender.

"Angad," she placed her hand on his and smiled tearfully, "tum ne jo kiya bilkul theek kiya….agar us zaalim doctor ke haathon tumne mera ilaaj karwaaya hota tho shayad main apne aapko bhi kabhie maaf nahin kar paati…..aaj us laalchi doctor ke khilaaf report likhwaakar tumne mujhey Maya ke karz se bhi mukt kar diya hai…..thanks Angad." Her warm tears soaked his hands as they flowed incessantly from her eyes.

Gayatri could not control herself as she realized that for years, Kripa had harbored angst against all money-hungry doctors. Her need for redemption had taken her to Kishangarh, where her self-sacrifice was just a means towards deliverance from the guilt of seeing her sister die at the hands of a selfish doctor. Angad had unknowingly lifted a burden off her chest.

Riddhima and Gayatri hugged Kripa and consoled her as Armaan placed his arms around his friend. Suryabhan caressed his daughter's feet and silently cried in memory of his bereaved daughter, Maya and thanked Angad for what he had done for them. By turning in Dr Amit Kumar and Prithvi to the authorities, Angad had helped them avenge the crime committed by another fraudulent doctor years ago.

"So you are not upset with me?" Angad looked into her eyes and asked.

'Why would I be upset with you? Tumney jo bhi kiya wo mere liye kiya…..because you love me……and understand me." She smiled.

"Yup…..love is all about understanding each other," Armaan sighed.

"And forgiving and accepting each other for who they are," Riddhima smiled back.

Angad sniffed, "Kripa…you still score higher than me then."

"Score higher?" Riddhima asked.

"Riddhima…samjha karo…..Kripa forgave Angad and accepted him for who he was….so she gets 2 points….and Angad understands her….so he gets 1 point on the love scale….am I right?" Armaan asked smugly.

Angad, Kripa and her parents laughed at Armaan's comment. As always, Armaan had managed to cheer them all with his amusing comments.  Prithvi and Dr Amit Kumar were buried into insignificance, as the friends were back teasing and pulling each other's legs.

"You are right buddy…..hum aadmi hamesha 1 point peeche hi rahenge," Angad quipped.

"Galat! In our case…I score all 3 points….and Armaan gets a big ZERO!" Riddhima chided him.

"Yeah right!" Armaan sprang up, "tumhare peeche peeche kaun America gaya tha madam? I think I should get all 3 points!"

"Haan aaye the….lekin tumhein maaf kisney kiya tha?" Riddhima retorted.

"Hey guys…..I am hungry," Angad tried to break the face-off between Armaan and Riddhima.

Gayatri and Suryabhan got their cues; they smiled at the young lovers and excused themselves. They needed to be alone, to grieve, discuss and call their family back home regarding Prithvi. They knew Kripa was in good hands, and her friends could take good care of her.

"Humein zara Jaipur phone karna hai," Suryabhan announced and walked back to their room along with Gayatri.

"Mama….Harshini se meri baat bhi karwaa dena please." Kripa said.

"Theek hai beta."

Kripa wiped her tears and got up to join her friends. Her sorrows had vanished in thin air as Armaan and Riddhima's squabble soon became the highlight of the afternoon. They argued back and forth like two teenagers. Bemused, Angad and Kripa stood silently and enjoyed their heated arguments over who-loved-who-more, and who-scored-higher on the love-o-meter!

Finally, Armaan and Riddhima  pulled away from each other and broke out into laughter.

"Kya hua? I was really enjoying this duel," Kripa commented.

"Behna…we were just practicing……after all shaadi ke baad sirf romance mein time thode hi waste karte rahenge……ladhai ki practice bhi karni chaahiye." Armaan chided.

"WHAT? Romance is a waste of time?" Riddhima smacked Armaan's arm, "iska matlab tum sirf dikhaava karte ho? You really don't love me that much!"

"Arre re Riddhima!" Armaan winced, "pitai ki bhi practice kar rahi ho ab?
Shaadi ke baad itni pitai bhi karogi kya?"

"Is se bhi zyaada!" She frowned and then chuckled playfully.

Kripa smiled and hugged both Armaan and Riddhima, 'thanks guys….I know you just wanted to distract me…..jab tak tum dono yahan ho…..mere aansoo agar aankhon mein aaye bhi tho shayad behnaa bhool jaayenge."

"They better!" Armaan laughed, "kyunki tum ladkiyon ka bharosa nahin hai…. tumhari aankhon mein water tanks lage hain…….baat baat par rona shuru kar deti ho….Riddhima promise me you will not cry either."

"Bidai ke time par bhi nahin?" Riddhima asked innocently, 'us waqt tho har ladki roti hai."

"Tumhein tho khush hona chaahiye," Armaan laughed.

"Khush kyun?"

"Arre main tumhein Hitler se rescue kar raha hoon.....you should thank me!"

"ARMAAAN! Tumney mere papa ko phir Hitler kaha?" Riddhima was infuriated.

"Hitler ko Hitler nahin tho kya Gandhi kahoonga?"

"Aur tumhari mom? Wo kya hain? Phoolan devi?"

"Phoolan devi?" he scoffed.

"Aur kya…mere mama-papa par itna badha barood ka gola daala ki wo bechare kuch bhi keh nahin sake," Riddhima pouted, 'sharam se paani paani ho gaye."

"Wo barood ka gola nahin," Armaan grinned, "phoolon ka haar tha madam."

"Hey bhagwan….tum dono ko kya ho gaya hai?" Kripa covered her ears, "I agree with Angad……please resume these fights after marriage…..we have a lot of work to do before the wedding…..Riddhima tumhare kapde tayyar hain? Shaadi ka lehnga? Ya sari? Kya pehnogi?"

"Kuch nahin!" Armaan intercepted. Angad laughed his head off as he munched on his lunch.

Kripa rolled her eyes at Armaan, "Armaan!…Please keep your wise cracks to yourself…..this is serious stuff…..we only have one week and Riddhima still has not picked her clothes for the wedding."

"I am serious too behnaa," Armaan served himself lunch on a plate, "kuch nahin pehnegi tho kaam bahut aasaan ho jaayega….tum logon ke liye bhi aur mere liye bhi," he winked mischievously at the women.

Riddhima turned red at his outrageous comments, "kuch tho sharam karo….Kripa ke parents bhi yahin hain."

"Wo log tho apne room mein hain….aur sharam kyun karoon….kyun Angad? Apni hone waali biwi se apne dil ke baat nahin kahunga tho kise kahunga?" Armaan asked seriously.

Angad laughed heartily, "Mallika se!"

The women were stunned, as was Armaan.

"Mallika?" Armaan's eyes lit up.

" Mallika?" the women were mortified.

"Haan haan Mallika yaar," Angad winked.

"Mallika Sherawat? Ya…ya Malaika Arora?" Armaan asked.

"Mallika! There ij onleeee one Mallikaaaaa!" Angad grinned, "the bachelor party gal….bhool gaya?"

"Oh yeah Mallika!" Armaan laughed and gave him a high five.

"Bachelor party?" Riddhima asked angrily, "you want to have a bachelor party? Ek hafta hai sirf shaadi ko……yeh bachelor party zaroori hai kya?"

"Of course sweetheart…why do you think I am getting married?" Armaan asked.

"You are getting married…so you can have a bachelor party?" Riddhima was furious.

"Yes Riddhima," Angad chuckled and placed his arm around Armaan, "jab hum sab interns the…tab Armaan aur mera ek hi khwab tha….aur wo tha ki apni apni shaadi se pehle dhoom dhaam se ek bachelor party karenge….so I have to keep my promise to my friend."

With a pout, Armaan snuffled, "Riddhima….marte time har qaidi ki akhiri ichcha poori ki jaati hai…..kya umar qaid se pehle mera itna bhi adhikaar nahin hai?"

The women rolled their eyes and gave up. They whispered amongst themselves and then announced, 'OK….you guys can have your bachelor party as long as you don't spoil our ladies sangeet…is that a deal?"

"Arre…no way!" Angad protested, "how can you have sangeet without the singer? Mere bina koi sangeet wangeet nahin hoga….and that too my best friend's wedding yaar!"

Kripa smiled and whispered softly, 'Riddhima…let them join the sangeet…warna yeh bachchon ki tarah rote rahenge….I have an idea…we will crash their bachelor party and catch them red handed."

Riddhima nodded her head and announced, 'Ok….we women are very benevolent creatures….you guys are welcome to the sangeet party! And yes….you can do whatever you want at the bachelor's party…we could care less!"

"Thank you your highness!" Armaan replied cynically, "aap invitation nahin deti tho hum kaise aate? Aur aapki permission ke bina bachelor party bhi kaise kar sakte hain? After all we are just slaves to the majesty your highness!"

The four of them continued their little arguments and teasing sessions over lunch and then helped each other clean up. They hung around for hours and discussed the upcoming wedding and arrangements.

Later that evening, Armaan set up the portable dialysis machine for Kripa, that they had procured in the US.

"Now sister….instead of rushing to the hospital each time….the hospital will be at your disposal…..ab tumhein kahin jaane ki zaroorat nahin hai….I have talked to Dr Mani and his team…..they will make sure your dialysis sessions are carried out timely….and Angad," Armaan looked at him earnestly, "both Apollo and Sanjeevani hospitals have placed Kripa on their priority transplant list….every accident victim will be cross matched with Kripa's sample…..and whenever they find the right match in a brain dead patient…..Kripa will get her donor….sab theek ho jaayega…..don't worry guys…..main hoon na!" He smiled tearfully at both his friends.

Angad and Kripa were overwhelmed by Armaan's efforts.

"Yaar…itni jaldi tuney yeh saari arrangements kaise kar li?" Angad was surprised.

"Technology buddy! Cellphone…..pager…..computer…..contacts….my fingers did the walking while I did the talking," Armaan grinned at his own P.J.

"Papa and Dr Mani met this morning before we came to pick you at the station……Armaan and I convinced them to make these arrangements," Riddhima smiled, "Kripa…..you are special to everyone at Sanjeevani……some nurses and staff were even willing to donate their kidneys…..Armaan aur meri bad kismati hai ki hamara blood type tum se match nahin karta…warna tho hum bhi…," Riddhima's voice cracked with emotions.

Kripa hugged her friend and sobbed on her shoulder, "Nahin Riddhima….tum logon ne pehle hi bahut kiya hai….please don't say anything more."

"No more tears ladies…..please turn off those faucets," Armaan hugged both the women and then whispered, "Riddhima…..maine bhi shaadi ke liye koi kapde nahin khareede hain….what should I wear?"

The women pulled away and looked at each other curiously.

'Armaan….kal tailor ghar aa raha hai…..why don't you both come and give your measurements…..tumhare liye Sherwani aur Angad ke liye kurta pajama…..kyun kaisa rahega?" Kripa asked.

"Sounds good to me!" Armaan answered, "chalo Riddhima….we are getting late….kahin Hitler naaraaz na ho jaaye."

"Armaaaan! Please show some respect to him…..after all in a week he will be your father-in-law." Riddhima picked her bag and headed towards the door angrily.

Armaan said his goodbyes and rushed out the door after Riddhima. Their squabble continued all the way to the car as Angad and Kripa waved to them from the balcony.

"Kitne pyaare dost hain dono," Kripa sighed and turned towards at Angad, her back resting against the balcony railing. The gentle breeze and the warm moonlit sky added to her ethereal looks. Angad came closer and removed a tendril of hair from her face, "pyaari si premika ke pyaare se dost." He grabbed her waist, "aur ek hamara pyaar sa ghar." After kissing her forehead, he whispered, "welcome to your new home…..poora din nikal gaya lekin tumhein theek se welcome bhi nahin kar paaya."

"Welcome tho mehmaano ka hota hai," she rested her head on his shoulder, "apno ka nahin…..aur tumney jo mere liye aur mere parivar ke liye jo kiya hai….wo sirf ek apna hi kar sakta hai…..thanks Angad….main tumhara ehsaan kabhie nahin bhoolungi."

He pulled her snugly into his arms and drew a deep breath, "apna kehti ho aur phir ehsaan ki baat karti ho? Ab kabhie aisi baat na kehna.....samjhi?"

She shut her eyes and buried her face in his chest; his sweet and pungent fragrance sucked her into his arms even further, "samjhi…" she replied dreamily.

As they swayed gently, he whispered, "mann karta hai…yeh raat kabhie khatam na ho….aur tum hamesha yun hi meri baahon mein jhoomti raho."

"Agar ek gaana sunaaoge tho raat bhar tumhari baahon mein rehne ko tayyar hoon," she mumbled.

"Sach?"

"Much!" She chuckled.

Listen to this absolutely beautiful song from "Ada' by AR Rehman as Angad croons in his beloved's ears; the two of them oblivious of their surroundings, lost in each other's arms…..

Tu Hai Zabaan, Main Hoon Bayaan
Tu Hai Neha, Main Hoon Haya

Tere Bina Main Hoon Be Zameen,
Tere Bina Main Be Aasma

Tu Hai Nadiyaan, Main Hoon Sangam
Tu Naya Saal, Main Pehla Mausam
Tere Bina Main Hoon Be Zameen,

Tere Bina Main Be Aasma,
Tere Bina Main Hoon Be Zameen,
Tere Bina…..
Meherbaan …..

Tu Hai Sana, Main Hoon Ana
Tu Hahteli, Main Hoon Hena

Aaj Elaan Yeh Kar Denge, Hum Ek Hai Ek Rahenge
Jo Aajaye Koi Toofan , Kabhi Raah Se Hum Nah Hathenge
Is Berangi Duniya Ko, Pyar Se Hum Rang Denge
Wafa Ka Diya Jalayenge, Har Ghar Mein Noor Bahenge

Tu Hai Nazar, Main Nazara
Tu Hai Sagar, Main Kinara
Tu Hai Zabaan, Main Hoon Bayaan
Tu Hai Neha, Main Hoon Haya
Meherbaan

You are the language, I am the meaning
You are beauty, I am modesty
Without you I am landless,
Without you I am skyless

You are the rivers, I am the confluence
You are the new eve, I am the first season

Without you I am landless,
Without you I am skyless,
Without you I am landless,

Without you…..
Kindness…..

You are eulogy, I am grace
You are the palm, I am the mehndi (decoration)

Today we will announce that we are one and will always stay one,
Even if a storm comes, we will never move from the path
We will colour this colourless world with love,
We will light up the lamp of faith, light will flow in every house

You are the vision, I am the sight
You are the sea, I am the shore
You are the language, I am the meaning
You are beauty, I am modesty

….to be contd….sangeet and bachelor's party
