part 49 : To Err is Human

NEXT FEW DAYS:

With the preparations for the wedding in full gear, one would have thought that the Gupta and Mallik households would be abuzz with activity, but it was Angad's home that soon became the epicenter of action.

Drs Keerti and Shubhankar visited Kripa and her parents regularly. Kripa was pleasantly surprised when they informed her of Angad's role in their lives. By separating Dr Keerti from her abusive husband, her respect and love for her fiance had grown even further. She had always despised Dr Kartik and was happy that Dr Keerti did not have to endure that chauvinistic man anymore.

Gauri and Padma preferred to meet at Angad's place as Gayatri became a good source of information on wedding rituals and preparation. Being part of a large family where weddings were celebrated as frequently as birthday parties, Gayatri assumed the role of the 'wedding advisor' to the two women. The three of them hit it off instantly and spent most of their awake hours shopping or preparing for the wedding.

Rahul and Muskaan were informed about the wedding and were on their way to India for the big event.

What were Riddhima and Kripa up to?

Kripa was fortunate to receive most of her care at home with the home dialysis unit and regular home visits by Dr Mani. To Angad and Armaan's chagrin, Riddhima and her spent most of their time with each other. From making a guest list, to selecting wedding invitation cards, to selecting Riddhima's outfits for the wedding, sangeet, reception and various other ceremonies, they had no time for their impatient lovers.

Angad had resumed his activities at Sanjeevani, but had decided to not work overtime at Dr Gauri's clinic anymore. With Angad gone most of the day, Armaan tried to interfere with the women's planning sessions whenever he could, but was thrown out most of the time as his constant blabbering and clowning around distracted and slowed down the women.

"Armaaaan! Please chale jao….humein kaam karne do!" Riddhima protested as he tried to get her attention by stealing kisses, nabbing her when Kripa had stepped away, or just winking and making funny faces at her.

"Are you sure? Ab ki baar gaya tho phir wapas nahin aaoonga," Armaan pouted, pretending to be hurt by Riddhima's statement.

"Armaan….tum aur Angad aaj shaam ko aa jaana…..aaj tailor aa raha hai….he needs to take measurements from all of us," Kripa looked up from her writing pad and frowned at him, "abhi please chale jao….humein kaam karne do…..and don't threaten my friend…..we all know you will be back," she chuckled.

"OK….I promise I will be a good boy…..I will behave," he pinched Riddhima's waist from behind and then sat next to Kripa with a serious expression. Riddhima gave him a dirty look and shook her head and thought, "yeh ladka kabhie nahin sudhrega."

"Oh….guest list!" Armaan peered over the pad and read the names carefully, "arre….this list is incomplete!"

"Kyun? Sab ko tho bula liya humnein," Riddhima was surprised.

"Sab ko? No yaar…..where is Tina….and Ruby…..and Dolly……and….and Rhea…..and Sunaina….and…and," he kept rattling off names various names.

"Yeh kaun hain?" Riddhima asked.

"My ex girlfriends!" Armaan stated matter of factly.

Riddhima glared at him, "ex girlfriends! And how many ex girlfriends are there?"

Armaan started counting on his fingers, "mmm…four….seven…mmm…..fifteen….uhh…..twenty eight……naa….uhh….thirty! Yes…thirty….chalo write down these thirty names too!" He commanded.

Kripa and Riddhima were aghast; they just stared at Armaan in disbelief.

"Kya hua? You don't believe me? I can show you my old diary…..you ladies are underestimating the charm of this stud," he was incensed.

"Why would we want to invite your ex girlfriends?" Kripa narrowed her eyes, and  snapped her fingers at him.

Armaan blushed a little and scratched his neck, "so…so they will know what they missed…..agar wo haan keh deti tho aaj mandap mein wo hoti."

Riddhima and Kripa sprang up and pulled Armaan from the chair. Without giving him a chance, they stifled his protests and threw him out of the room and secured the lock so he would not dare to disturb them again.

EVENING:

Angad and Armaan strolled in authoritatively and settled sown on the couches as the tailor took the women's measurements. As the tailor worked around the women with his tape, Angad and Armaan stared at each other and then frowned at the tailor. They were obviously displeased by the manner in which the tailor was measuring their women.

"Tailor saab….yeh kya ho raha hai?" Angad asked angrily.

"Jee sahib…..abhi ladies ka naap le raha hoon…phir aap logon ka bhi le loonga." The tailor hesitated and replied.

Armaan jumped up and grabbed the measuring tape from the tailor, "kya measure karna hai? Main karta hoon….aur aap likhte jaaiye."

The tailor was stunned and with his mouth gaping, stood motionless as Armaan hung the tape around his neck. The women were shocked and yelled, "guys! Please let him finish his work!"

"Nahin….measurements hum lenge," Angad stepped forwards and placed his arm around Kripa possessively.

"You men are too much!" Kripa frowned, "khud tho ex girlfriends ko invite karna chaahte ho," she glared at Armaan and then turned her piercing gaze at Angad, "and Mallika ke saath bachelor's party mein masti karna chaahte ho….aur yahan tailor se jalan ho rahi hai…..you men are too much!"

Armaan cleared his throat and placed his arm around Riddhima, "yes…we are possessive men….aur kisi bhi paraye mard ko tumhare itne kareeb nahin dekh sakte!"

The tailor, an elderly man turned red from embarrassment, "beta….yeh kaisi baat kar rahe ho…..yeh tho meri betiyan jaisi hain."

"Yeh tho kehne ki baat hai tailor saheb…..aakhir hum bhi mard hain….hum jaante hain hamara sirf one-track mind hota hai," Armaan said seriously.

Angad agreed, "haan tailor saheb…..hum aapki jagah hote tho itni khubsoorat ladkiyon ko dekhkar," he squeezed Kripa's shoulders, "hum bhi pighal jaate…..aur baar baar measurements lete rehte……galti aapki nahin……hamari khubsoorat premikaayon ki hai."

The tailor was rendered wordless; he had never encountered such possessive lovers or been accused by anyone in his 35 year career.

Riddhima and Kripa rolled their eyes and pushed the men away. Riddhima pulled the measuring tape from Armaan's neck and handed it to the tailor, "tailor saab…..in pagalon ki baat ka bura nahin maaniye…..yeh nautanki baaz hain…..please apna kaam kariye."

With a disappointed look the men plopped on the couches and had to be content being spectators as the tailor resumed his job.

"Yaar Armaan." Angad whispered.

"Haan bol," Armaan replied with his fists clenched.

"We chose the wrong profession."

"I agree."

"Doctor ki jagah…." Angad paused and then grinned at Armaan.

"TAILOR HONA CHAAHIYE THA!" The men roared simultaneously and gave each other a high five.

The women just rolled their eyes one more time and ignored their banter.

SANJEEVANI:

Armaan's statement that he had secured a position at the Psychiatry department at Sanjeevani had intrigued Dr Gupta all these days. Even though he had resigned to the fact that his daughter was getting married to Armaan in a few days, more than their alliance, he was surprised that Armaan had been offered a job by his Institute. The fact that Riddhima had consummated her relationship with Armaan had indeed outraged him, but Padma had consoled him all evening and convinced him that the best recourse was to get them married as soon as possible, "hum khushi khushi haan nahin karenge tho wo ghar se bhaag kar shaadi kar lenge…..ab hamari beti Armaan ki hi amaanat hai…hum kuch nahin kar sakte Shashank."

Dr Gupta approached the chief of Psychiatry one morning, "Hello Dr Gopal."

"Hello sir….aap kaise aaye? Mujhey bula liya hota," the polite elderly gentleman got up from his seat to greet the chief of SMI.

"Nahin nahin Dr Gopal…..aisi koi baat nahin hai….I just wanted to ask how your department was doing…..and have you filled the vacancy for a new Psychaitrist?"

"Yes…actually, we are going to hire a very capable young man…..he comes with a lot of recommendations….from none other than Dr Roy……you know Dr Roy from Kasauli?"

"Yes….of course…Dr Roy is an authority in the world of Psychiatry," Dr Gupta nodded.

"Well…Dr Roy personally called me and recommended this young man's name…..and I have met him too….he is amazing…..and the perfect fit for our department….he is smart…..energetic……loves what he does……and from what I know, a big hit with his patients….his name is Dr Armaan Mallik….in fact he told me he worked here for a few months….but then left for Kasauli……he told me that Sanjeevani was not challenging enough for him."

Dr Gupta was flustered and in a huff thanked Dr Gopal, 'good job Dr Gopal…..I have full faith in your department and hiring skills."

"Be assured Dr Gupta," he smiled, "I know we are very accomplished……and now with Dr Mallik on board….we can just get better!"

Dr Gupta nodded sheepishly and left the office. As he walked towards the elevator, a subdued smile graced his lips. He inhaled deeply and thought, "Riddhima bte….shayad tumney apna jeevan saathi sahi pehchaana hai….ho sakta hai mujh se hi bhool ho gayi thi……kaash Abhimanyu iska baap na hota!" His smile vanished as the image of Abhimanyu grinning at him arrogantly, flustered him.

…………………………………………………………………………

THE NIGHT OF THE SANGEET:

After a lot of arguments over the venue of the sangeet function, Armaan's outhouse was selected as the place for the ceremony. Abhimanyu and Shashank had put their feet down and each wanted the event to be held at their home, as if it was another competitive round of who-is-the-best-surgeon, rather than which place would be appropriate for the ceremony. With the guest list expanding by the minute to include all Sanjeevani employees, Sanjeevgarh staff, Abhimanyu's affluent contacts and Gauri's staff and contacts, it was obvious that space would be tight at the Gupta's or at Angad's place. There was not much Shashank could control these days; so the venue for the sangeet became the source of contention for him.

Armaan and Angad decided to intervene at that point and decided to hold the event at the Mallik outhouse which was technically Armaan's dig and not Abhimanyu's. Shashank relented as he convinced himself that the outhouse belonged to his would-be son-in-law. Abhimanyu considered this a victory of sorts but at Gauri's insistence hid his glee and promised to be the best host and best 'samdhi' to his counterpart.

The grand event was held with guests invited from both sides. Armaan's old college friends and Riddhima's school friends were also sent invitations. Rahul and Muskaan had arrived in time from the US, and so had Josh and Simone.

Armaan looked spiffy in a white silk kurta pajama suit with a red scarf around his neck. A crisp looking Angad in a black kurta pajama with a white scarf joined Armaan in the men's section as they faced the gorgeous women on the other side of the room.

Armaan gasped as his heart fluttered at the sight of Riddhima, who looked ravishing in a pink lehnga with mehndi laden hands and feet. She gave him a sweet smile and sat amongst the women. Armaan's gaze was fixated on Riddhima as she adjusted her lehnga and made small talk with all the women. Riddhima warned him with her gaze to stop gaping at her so obviously, but an unabashed Armaan flipped his gaze from her eyes to her lips to her bosom and back to her eyes.

His flirtatious body language did not escape Josh's observant eye.

'Dr Mallik….kaho tho phere bhi aaj hi ho jaayein? You look pretty impatient," Josh slapped Armaan's back and chuckled. Armaan blushed a little and finally turned his gaze away from his lady love.

After her recent dialysis and Epo-shot (injection given to help with anemia in kidney patients), Kripa was glowing from head to toe in her blue and white lehnga. Angad almost collapsed from joy as Kripa walked in with her parents. Her enchanting smile and her magnetic gaze had him mesmerized. If there was one wish he had tonight, then it was to hold her in his arms and make love to her. Kripa gave him a curious look and gestured him to stop gawking at her in front of all the guests. He grinned awkwardly at being caught red handed and looked away at the group of singers, who had been hired for the event.

Padma, Gayatri and Gauri surrounded the young women and started the sangeet with a number of traditional wedding numbers. Shashank and Abhimanyu exchanged cold 'hellos' without shaking hands or hugging each other. They settled on couches on opposite ends of the living room with their arms folded across their chests. Padma and Gauri had resolved to ignore the men if they acted like bratty kids, and that's what they did!

Gayatri sang this beautiful wedding song from 'bazaar' all the women joined in:

Chale aao saiyan rangeele mai vari re-4

sajan mohe tum bin bhaye na gajra -2
ho bhaye na gajra, ji bhaye na gajra
na motiya chameli na juhi na mogra

A coy Riddhima and a mesmerized Armaan exchanged glances as the women teased them with the lyrics…..

sajan mohe tum bin bhaye na zewar-2
ho bhaye na zewar, ji bhaye na zewar
na jhumke na kanga na jhumar na jhanjhar

sajan mohe tum bin bhaye na singar -2
ji bhaye na singar, ho bhaye na singar
na kajal na surkhi na missi na mehendi

Next, Angad got up and signaled the other singers and dholki waalas to join him.

Here is a beautiful wedding song from 'Black and White'

'Peer manavan':

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_4vnWot9EZs

Ne mein..
Peer manava peer manava peer manava
Sow sow
Dhek chadava peer manava
Jaavan vari jaavan mein
Jaavan vari jaavan
Gaavan mangal gaavan mein
Gaavan mangal
Oh ne mein peer manava

Oh jaavan vari jaavan
Oh gaavan mangal gaavan
Oh ne mein
Oh ne mein peer manava
Sow sow dhek chadava
Oh jaavan vari jaavan
Oh gaavan mangal gaavan
Oh ne mein

Kripa and Muskaan took the cue and got up to join Angad in the center. They danced joyously with the other dancers. Angad, Rahul, Josh and Simone were soon on the dance floor too. Angad kept a keen eye on Kripa as they all danced and sang; memories of their last dance from two years ago were still fresh in his mind. She danced with full vigor and enthusiasm without any traces of exhaustion or illness…..

Aangne mein aaye bahar
Mehandi rang layee
Mehandi ke rang hai hazar
Mehandi rang layee
Mehandi ke mehandi ke
Mehandi ke rang hai hazar
Mehandi rang layee
Kajra lago koi bindiya sajaao
Ohh…ohh.. ohh..
Nazare utharun aur teeka lagao
ohhh.. ohh..ohh
Badtha hi jaaye humar
Mehandi rang layee
Jeevan ka hai yeh singaar
Mehandi rang layee

Kripa pulled Riddhima onto the dance floor; the three women twirled and danced around the other singers and dancers. Armaan could not hold himself back and joined the gang on the dance floor. Rahul and Simone were persuaded to join in too. Angad convinced Shubhankar and Keerti to the dance floor too. The old Sanjeevani gang was back in action- dancing, singing and frolicking together.

Oh ne mein
Oh ne mein peer manava
Sow sow dhek chadava
Oh jaavan vari jaavan
Oh gaavan mangal gaavan
Oh ne mein
Hasne lage tho lelo iski balainya
Phool lo ke gajaro se bhar lo kalaiyan
Badtha hi jaaye humar
Mehandi rang layee
Oh ne mein peer manava
Sow sow dhek chadava
Oh jaavan vari jaavan
Oh gaavan mangal gaavan
Kher mangi sajan mein ne teri
Duwa na koi aur mange
Kher mangi sajan mein ne teri
Duwa na koi aur mange
Ho we sajana de umar na ve levi
Ho we sajana de umar na ve levi
Duwa na koi aur mange
Kher mangi sajan mein ne teri
Duwa na koi aur mange
Oh ne mein peer manava
Sow sow dhek chadava
Oh jaavan vari jaavan
Oh gaavan mangal gaavan
Oh ne mein peer manava
Sow sow dhek chadava
Oh jaavan vari jaavan
Oh gaavan mangal gaavan
Oh ne mein

"NOW HERE IS A SPECIAL SONG BY THE GROOM FOR HIS BRIDE!" Josh took the microphone from Angad and sang this popular number……

"soniye ve (dhak dhak)" from Kismat connection

Dhak Dhak Dhak Dhak Dhak Dhak Dhak
Make Some Noise...
Dhak Dhak Dhak Dhak Dhak Dhak Dhak
Let' s Screem...

Come On Come On Now..Break To The Beat Get Down
Come On Come On Now..Sing It Along Soniye

Dhak Dhak Dhak Mera Dil Dhadke ..Dhak Dhak Dhak Dhak Dhak
Tere Bin Tere Bin Dil Na Lage.. Dhak Dhak Dhak Dhak Dhak

Oye! Soniye Ve Soniye Mere Naal Aaja Soniye,
oniye Ve Soniye Mere Naal Aaja Soniye
Soniye Ve Soniye Mere Naal Aaja Soniye, Soniye Ve
Soniye Mere Naal Aaja Soniye

Armaan and Riddhima took the center stage and danced with each other as Josh, Angad and the other singers sang passionately….

You're So Beautiful
You Got The Moves But You're In Control
O Meri Sweet Hot Soniye,
You Make Me Hip, You Make Me Hop,
So Lets Beat It Non-Stop

Kehthe Hai Pyar Kise Aaj Humko Yeh Bathla De
Got My Beating No Stopping,
Everytime I Got You Looking At Me
Crazy Call You Baby Now!
Ho.. Kehthe Hai Pyar Kise Aaj Humko Yeh Bathla De
Matlab Pyar Ka Deewane Zara Samjha De
Rakdon Kadam Tum Apne Jahaan Par Jaan Wahi Hum De Denge
Itni Ijaazath Raab Mujhe De De Sajde Mein Ishq Ka Karloon
Haan Tujhe Doli Mein Bhittah Ke Teri Maang Saja Ke Lejaoon
Mein Sab Se Chura Ke
Soniye Ve Soniye Mere Naal Aaja Soniye, Soniye Ve Soniye
Mere Naal Aaja Soniye
Soniye Ve Soniye Mere Naal Aaja Soniye, Soniye Ve Soniye
Mere Naal Aaja Soniye

Dhak Dhak Dhak Dhak Dhak Dhak Dhak
Dhak Dhak Dhak Dhak Dhak Dhak Dhak

Out Of My Mind, When You Think That 'M Crazy
Crazy Little Thing Called To My Lady
That's The Asina, Indian Hip-Hop Generation
Singing One Word Soniye To The Nation  (Nation  Nation )

Riddhima teased Armaan and pulled her mom, Padma to the dance floor. She placed her arm around her mom and sang....

Chodd Ke Mein Apno Ko Tere Saath Kaise Jaaoon
Dhak Dhak Dhak Dhak Dhak Dhak Dhak

Kripa helped Shashank join his family on the floor. Shashank smiled at last, took his jacket off and hugged his daughter and wife. Riddhima rested her head on her dad's chest and sang….

Ho.. Chodd Ke Mein Apno Ko Tere Saath Kaise Jaaoon
Ajnabi Rishton Ko Soch Soch Mein Ghabraoon

Armaan smiled at his in-laws-to-be and reassured them…..

Hogi Kami Mehsoos Na Inki Ithna Khayaal Mein Rakhoonga
Kehna Sake Jo Baath Zabaan Se Aakhon Se Teri Padh Lein
Ho.. Tujhe Doli Mein Bhittah Ke Teri Maang Saja Ke Lejaoonga
Mein Sab Se Chura Ke
Hoye! Soniye Ve Soniye Mere Naal Aaja Soniye,
Soniye Ve Soniye Mere Naal Aaja Soniye
Soniye Ve Soniye Mere Naal Aaja Soniye, Soniye Ve Soniye
Mere Naal Aaja Soniye

Finally, Gauri and Abhimanyu were on the dance floor. They danced with their son and future daughter-in-law. Shashank withdrew himself and was back on the couch once Abhimanyu became a part of the celebrations. With a slanting smile, Abhimanyu glanced at his rival with the corner of his eyes and thought, "Shanky….you will never change….will you?"

The ceremony broke for drinks and snacks as everyone mingled and talked to each other.

"Nice to see you and Muskaan after all these days," Angad patted Rahul's back.

"Same here….we feel we are back at Sanjeevani," Rahul commented.

"Oye…rehne de mundiya," Muskaan replied in her authentic Punjabi accent, "Sanjeevani mein tu itni masti kahan karta tha? Sirf padhai aur lab mein ghusa rehta tha…..agar main na hoti tho aaj bhi kisi lab mein sadh raha hota!"

"Jaa…jaa rehne de….tu tho gale lag gayi thi mere….main kya karta?" Rahul retorted. To everyone surprise, instead of acquiring an American accent in the US, Rahul had returned with a Punjabi accent courtesy his Punjabi wife.

The other friends chuckled as the only married couple amongst their internship group argued away.

"oye! Tere gale main padhi thi? Ya tu mere peeche peeche aaya tha? Yahan tak shaadi karke America bhi le gaya mujhey!"

'Waise Armaan ek baat kahoon?" Rahul asked, "tu shaadi mat kar yaar!"

"Kyun?" Armaan asked as he sipped his drink.

"zindagi bhar nakhre uthaane padhenge apni biwi ke!"

Muskaan smiled and tied her dupatta around the waist of her shimmering salwaar-kameez. She held Kripa and Riddhima's hands and started dancing on this popular song. The women teased their respective men and had them dancing to their tune….

'Nakhre' from "barsaat'

(haath utha ke jara gol ghum jaa
phoolon wala gajara judey mein saja) - 2
mere sang mundiye nach ke dikha
shaadi jo kiya hain tune toh ab nakhre bhi utha - 2
haath utha ke jara gol ghum jaa

nazrein uthake jara dekh sajna nazrein uthake jara dekh - 2
main toh hazaro mein ek sajna main toh hazaro mein ek
baahon mein utha le seene se laga le ab na kar bekaraar
chanda jaise mukhde pe bindiya laga

salma sitaron wali saadi manga
shaadi jo kiya hain tune toh ab nakhre bhi utha - 2
(haath utha ke jara gol ghum jaa

haath utha ke jara gol ghum jaa
phoolon wala gajara ab judey mein saja
mere sang mundiye nach ke dikha
shaadi jo kiya hain tune toh ab nakhre bhi utha – 2

The men came back with a befitting reply…..

'Soni de nakhre' from "Partner'
